Presented by the VT Consortium for Adoption & Guardianship and NFI VT, this event gives members of the adoption community the opportunity to come together in a supportive environment around the common purpose of providing space to share honest feelings, connect, and heal.

Director Rebecca Autumn Sansom will join us at the event for a Q&A, as part of her ongoing Fog Lift Tour.

About this film:

This film, directed by Rebecca Autumn Sansom, is about reckoning with relinquishment trauma and the cultural phenomenon that is author Nancy Verrier’s landmark book The Primal Wound. It is the only film about this critical topic produced by an adoptee and first mother that features Verrier herself, psychologist Dr. David Brodzinsky and Dr. Amanda Baden.

This award-winning documentary has been deemed by child welfare workers, therapists, psychologists, and adoption professionals (including adoptees, natural mothers, and adoptive parents) the latest recommended resource for anyone interested in better understanding adopted individuals.

The film not only deals with relinquishment trauma, but also Verrier’s philosophy that the damage done by the separation of a child and their biological mother culminates in a primal wound that must be acknowledged in order to heal.

This documentary, a collaborative effort between filmmaker and adoptee, Rebecca Autumn Sansom, and her biological mother, Jill Hawkins, Ph.D., delves into the profound subject of relinquishment trauma, also known as the primal wound. It offers a unique perspective from both sides of the adoption experience.

As Sansom herself shares, "The book 'The Primal Wound' introduced me to an alternative narrative about adoption, one that resonated deeply with my feelings of loss and grief—a perspective I had never encountered until I came across Verrier's remarkably insightful words."

We look forward to your participation in this enlightening event.
